Weekend recap

Not this weeked, the last one. I have been looking through the pictures to find ones to illustrate what we did during last weekend's reunion, but all the pictures are just us sitting around. No action shots, or even location shots save for one of the Gruene water tank. But we did do stuff, although we mostly sat around and talked. And talked. And talked.

On Saturday morning, we had gifts and surprises. We do secret santa gift exchanges every year, so we had those to open and we also had surprises for both Ada and Tasha. For Tasha, the rest of us had been working on a collaborative wall hanging. It had been nearly a year in the making and planning, and it was (nearly, and actually was by the end of the weekend) done. She was totally surprised and loved it. We loved it too. I think it totally matched our vision and yet was more beautiful than we expected.

The surprise for Ada was a non-wedding shower wedding non-shower, or something like that. Ada and Katja have been together for a long time now, and we wanted to celebrate and fete them with presents. Katja was present for the party through iChat, and they were both surprised and maybe a bit overwhelmed by the presents. It was so great to celebrate them.

Once the presents were done, it was nearly Kate's nap time. Once she was asleep, the five of us headed down to Maria's Taco Express for lunch and then over to South Congress for some poking around the shops and a long coffee break at Jo's. Dinner that night was fajitas at home and a fire until very late at night.

Sunday morning we decided for something a little more active and we headed out for a hike on the greenbelt. I don't remember very clearly what we did during nap, but I think we just hung around the house and some people napped while other read or knitted or just sat. That evening we went to the Salt Lick for bbq. Yum. And we perfectly timed our return into Austin to drive over the Congress bridge just as the bats were pouring out. We'd been planning to stop and watch, but the view from the slow drive by was so perfect, we just headed home for another evening by the fire.

On Monday, Graeme had to go to work, so the rest of us piled into the van for a day trip down to Gruene. Lunch at the Gristmill, some window shopping and a beautiful drive on the back roads back into Austin.

It was a perfect weekend. Now it's time to plan the next reunion.

Birthday party

On Saturday we went to a group birthday party for the babies in Kate's playgroup. There was a pool of water, a slip 'n slide and a pool of balls. There was great food and cute babies.

Mamas and babies:

We had a gift exchange. Each baby brought a gift, and everyone got to take one home. Here is Kate opening her present:

Then the babies had cake. Kate didn't get as messy as I had hoped, but she did enjoy it.

Kate and Beck

Kate and Beck are only three days apart in age, but on opposite ends of the growth chart. It's cool to see the variation of normal, no matter what age we are.

A Playdate

Last Friday, I took Kate over to where Sheryl takes care of Sophia. Sophia loved Kate. She didn't quite understand though why Kate wouldn't play with her. It was super cute:

Kate and Nora

A couple of weeks ago, Heather came over for an afternoon of tea and laundry. She brought her beautiful daughter Nora:

The girls are a bit young to play, but we did put them down on the playmat to see what they would think of each other. I'm not sure they really noticed:

Until Nora started to cry. Kate was not impressed.

It's great having Heather in the neighbourhood, to know that someone else is doing the same thing each day as I am. It's nice to have tea once a week and commiserate. I'll be sad when they move to Maine.

The wedding

On Sunday we attended a wonderful wedding. Rebecca and I have been friends for 15 years. She lives in Boston, but we chat nearly every day, so that even though I don't see her often, we are always caught up when we do. Rebecca is amazing at staying in touch with people, which was evident by the number of friends that flew from all over the continent, and even from Europe, to be at her wedding.

And it was a super fun wedding. And Rebecca and Jeff were glowingly happy. I love seeing my friends happy.

Of course, most of the photos I took were of my own daughter. It was hard to get photos of the festivities since the flash got lost in the big room. But it was really lovely, and I'm sure lots of other people got good photos. I got good photos of Kate though.

Congratulations to Heather and Matt!

Heather gave birth to Nora yesterday. Everyone is healthy and happy. Photos will appear on her blog sometime after they come home tomorrow. Welcome to the world, Nora!

Weekend report

It's been a good weekend so far. On Friday night, we went to Sheryl and Jonathan's house for movie night. We were really late getting there though, so we didn't watch the movie instead we just ate, hung around and played Wii. Graeme played Wii while holding Kate. It certainly kept her quiet for awhile.

Yesterday, we had a super busy day. We were getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner. We cleaned the house, cleaned the yards, made the turkey dinner, started a new batch of cider brewing and got the A/C fixed. We had a bunch of dog walking friends from the neighbourhood over for Thanksgiving dinner. It was really fun, and dinner was delish. I'm cooking up extra cranberry now for our leftovers. Yum.

Kate had a better day yesterday, although that could be my view of it since Graeme was home to help. We did try out the swing, which someone had given us, and it kept her quiet and happy for about 25 minutes, which gave me enough time to get the turkey in the oven. She slept through most of dinner and afterwards, which came back to bite us in the ass when she stayed awake until 1 am. We'll try for an eariler bedtime tonight.

yay!

Rebecca called me this morning to tell me she and Jeff are engaged. I'm so happy when my friends are happy, so I was doing a little dance around my living room when she told me. They haven't been dating for terribly long, but have been very close friends for many years. I'm totally happy for them both.

The people we knew at the wedding were all part of the mountain bike community. Here we are:

(sadly, Jennifer is missing from the picture, which is very sad. She'd played the music for the ceremony and I think she was still cleaning up or something. She did an awesome job with the music, but missed the picture. Alas.)

Wedding photos

I have a whole bunch of photos from our trip out west last weekend, and blogger has a limit on how many pictures you can put in a post, so I'm going to divide them up a bit. Look later on today for another photo post. We'll start with wedding specific photos.

The wedding was held at Mountain Home Lodge, which is up 1000' above the town of Leavenworth with an amazing view over the Icicle valley:

The whole lodge was for the wedding, and it was really nice to just have friends around - even those you didn't know yet. The lodge has 12 rooms and a few cabins, so the wedding party and a few extra friends (including us!) got rooms up in the lodge. Other guests stayed at home, and shuttles were run between the hotels and the lodge to keep people from having to drive up and down the narrow steep road. We were given 'the ranch' room, since it had a bit of a Texas theme.

The wedding was held on Sunday afternoon, and except for some wind, the conditions couldn't have been more perfect.

The ceremony was performed by Kelly, and it was quite short and very lovely. How can it not be when it's held with a background like this?
